I am a gigantic film watcher and I should have invested in some stock in Blockbuster because I am always there renting and returning flicks for my high definition television.

The people at our local Maplewood store even know me by name. I am not embarrassed though, I love movies, and they give me an escape from my long hard day at work.

One day after viewing my latest rental, I was channel surfing and I discovered many HD stations I didn’t even realize I had. One of these was part of the on demand feature through my satellite provider. I was growing with joyfulness as I browsed down the list of movies I haven’t seen.

Many of them weren’t available at my DVD store because they were sold out. I found at least six of them I wanted to watch that night. I chose to settle on one just to see the difference in the DVD HD quality image versus the on demand film.

As soon as it started, I detected a difference. Jeez, was I in trouble now, I no longer will have time to do the long chore list I have at home because I have discovered HD pay per view. After going through almost every movie in the list, I had to go back to my video store.

It has been a long time since I visited the store and they were all worried because they didn’t know what happened to their most popular consumer. I told the workers about my discovery and they were all smiling nodding their heads.

I picked up five more movies and returned home. Several days later, I checked the high definition channel for pay per view movies and there were several new ones available. I was so joyful that my cable provider was on top of my needs and delivered such great flicks in quality high definition picture.

I returned the flicks to the video store and returned to my television for flick watching. Having HD movies available with a few presses of my remote has helped me save time, money and gas.

The high definition pay per view movies are way less than the ones at Blockbuster and I don’t have to drive 10 miles all the time anymore. I visit my friends at the store nearly once a week now because that is all it takes for me to get what I need in between the time my cable company offers new movies for me to watch.

My grandchildren are constantly watching TV shows over at my place. Ostensibly, my children have forgotten the joys of cartoons and won’t let them follow much at home. So every day after school, once they enter my entryway, the TV turns on and doesn’t turn off until their parents come to pick them up.

My grandchildren are my joy and I love to observe them after they get out of school. Nevertheless, they complain every single day about how teentsy my TV is and how extraordinary theirs is at home. I have no problem with watching my television and I am almost blind but apparently, technology has already captured my 5 and 10 year old grandchildren.

My husband is also on the big HDTV frenzy and has been trying to talk me into one forever. I just don’t see the reason in purchasing something new when I have something already employed at home. Last weekend, we were at the center and my husband dragged me into Best Buy to look around, just like he always does.

He also took me by the hand through the HDTV section as he always does to show me all the great high definition channels they have on exhibit. I must declare that it all does look nice and all but I am caught in sticker shock.

My spouse then had me talk to a salesperson about all the offers they have at the moment such as free interest if you open up a card through them or 10% off the purchase. The 10% didn’t seem like much but it did help with handling the tax on the television and I guess my grandkids would truly love to observe their shows on a pleasant HDTV.

I told the salesperson to hurry up and ring it up before I changed my mind. Now, I am home with my new high definition television and it is quite amazing. My blood-shot eyes don’t have to strain to see a small image anymore because the screen is big enough for me to see everything with no problems.

My grandchildren hurried over when they heard of the purchase and you would have thought it was Xmas morning. They could not wait to turn it on and observe their shows. What a pleasure it was to observe them so excited!

So I guess I have now jumped into the 21st century with high definition. At least I won’t have to hear anymore about how great the HDTV is because I already know.

I don’t know about you, but I am fed up with spending so much money on a television license and satellite subscription year after year. I decided to investigate the other options. I was amazed at how far technology had come and the various home entertainment options available. For instance, I found a site that provides 3000 television channels for a one off payment. My first thought was ‘yeah, but how much is this once off fee’ and I was actually surprised with what I found. My girlfriend is a lawyer so she held my hand and went through the site’s legalities with me. I know I sound like a real wimp, but I have had unfortunate situations with online businesses and offers in the past – as a result I have my "personal lawyer" oversee any transaction online (very handy she is).

Now I’m not about to tell you the price I discovered as we all know prices change and I would hate to mislead you. While taking the cost into consideration, let’s just factor in the fact that when I sign up I no longer need my television license every year nor do I need to pay monthly subscriptions to my satellite provider. I’m living in London at the moment, so let me just calculate how much I am saving before I even buy anything.

I pay around 50 GBP a month for satellite subscriptions that equals roughly 65 U.S Dollars (50 X 1.3) a month.

Then multiply that by 12months in one year = 780 U.S Dollars.

Then my annual T.V license is 139 GBP which equals 219.7 U.S Dollars (139 X 1.3).

So 780 U.S Dollars a year for my satellite subscription plus my annual television license adds up to 999.7 U.S Dollars. That’s 1000 U.S Dollars I’ve already saved just this year by chosing one of the available home entertainment options through your pc.

Not thoroughly convinced of the quality we (myself and my lawyer) investigated further and we were very happy with what we saw. We found all of our favourite shows and some of the most well known television channels were 100% on board with this as it is totally legal.

We saw that it works anywhere in the world! There appear to be over 1,000,000 very grateful users already and they receive 24 hour technical support. Now it might seem like nothing at first glance but when we thought of the reality of having our favourite channels any and everywhere we go we were quite excited. There is nothing more frustrating when all you want to do is just zone out or catch up on your favourite shows while on holiday. You know how it goes: you go somewhere foreign and there are no English channels, it’s so frustrating: this online option solves that problem immediately. So now we don’t have to miss a must see episode of Heroes or Smallville because we are on holiday. See how clever it is?!

All that is needed for this type of application is your computer or laptop and your internet connection, no spyware or any additional hardware needs to be purchased. And what hotel now-a-days doesn’t have wireless internet connection? What home doesn’t have the internet? So, it is possible to get thousands of channels and access anywhere in the world, for a one off payment and no subscriptions.

Even if you are like me, then you are now moaning about the size of your screen for viewing, just think of the projector you could buy with all that money saved on licences and subscriptions!

So, if you, too, are frustrated with the cost of your viewing subscriptions, do some investigations. Given the age of technology we live in, there are other options out there for you which offer more flexibility and value for money.

I am a young man looking to add value to others’ lives anywhere I can. I believe through these times of economic difficulty we all need to help each other as much as possible. I am pretty sure and definiely hopeful that this will make a great contribution to your lives.

My spouse’s birthday is coming up soon and I know he has been eyeing a new television. HDTVs have been out for a little while now so I am sure that is what I will need to buy. I don’t know much about HD stuff but I do know the image is supposed to be unreal.

The other week I was over at my friend’s house and was admiring the picture on her HDTV. I can understand why everyone is going nuts over them. The HD picture truly is awesome. I went ahead and asked her how much she paid for hers and I nearly fell over.

Of course, hers is the biggest one available and has all the bells and whistles. I am not certain if we would ever use half the features she has on hers. So I started searching the Internet to find out more about this technology called HD and HDTV.

I found out I didn’t need to buy a gigantic television to get the same benefits. The smaller ones will provide us with the same type of picture just at a smaller degree. The smaller ones were much more affordable and were still a major upgrade from our old 19".

I also read that I could get HD service from my satellite company and receive many of the HD channels available now. I was starting to get thrilled about my mate’s birthday present. I decided to go out to Best Buy to see what they had available.

I spoke to the floor manager who told me everything I desired to know about the tv’s. I decided to go with a 37" Samsung HDTV. I thought it was the perfect size and price too. I called for delivery for his birthday so he will be stunned and have a new toy to play with on his day.

I didn’t truly know much about the new technology out for televisions until now. I am so glad I took the time to look into it. I think we will spend many Saturday nights on the lounge watching movies because now we have the theater experience in our own home.

Truly, if you think about it, in the long run we will be saving money because we won’t have to go out to the movie theater and pay for those overpriced movie tickets, candy and drinks. See, I knew this present would serve more of a meaning than just being a birthday present.

This year for Xmas, the big present was Wii. My children loved it and the entire tribe ended up loving it. We spent the entire day in front of the tv performing the different games Santa brought for the Wii. A few days after the Holidays, my boys are asking for a bigger and better television to go along with their game playing experience.

I realise that all of their friends have one of those new HDTVs but we never saw the reason for it. Our television works perfectly well and we don’t really have the cash to sink into a new HDTV. I also heard that you have to fork out extra to the cable co. for HDTV service. I am not interested in paying more money than I truly need to.

We already pay so much for the movie channels we subscribe to and I am not willing to cancel those since we all love to catch good movies at home. Nevertheless, I did feel that maybe it was time for an advance. We could also take the television currently in the living area and put it in the upstairs spare room so our guests can have some private television watching. So one weekend, my husband and I went out to Circuit City to see what we could afford.

The sales associate showed us one of the less expensive HDTVs accessible and let us know that it was just as good as the large names. We considered it and then decided that since we always buy Pioneer, we would rather stick with a name we know. We ended up buying a new Sony HDTV for only a little more than the less expensive one.

The sales associate did let us know about something that made paying a bit more for the television worth it. He said there are antennas obtainable that give you the same signals as the cable provider does. You buy it and place it either indoors or outside and then you can have all the channels you would acquire through the cable company without paying for it every month.

We looked into it and bought one of the antennas for outdoors. We now have it all set up and we couldn’t be happier. The kids love to play their games on the big HDTV and my husband and I love watching movies or tv on it. I must say I should have invested in this a while ago. I am amazed with the service we undergo from the antenna and the picture quality.

Jim Williams recommends that you take a look at one of the few HDTV antennas on the market that actually works! Resources: HDTV antenna RV Antenna

Just a few years ago VoIP broadband phone service was the biggest thing to hit the home communications market with its ability to save consumers substantial amounts of money on their phone bill, effectively reducing one’s overall cost for elective utilities. It made having unlimited phone service, and high speed Internet affordable at a time when most people had neither due to the high cost associated with these services. There were a small number of companies that would bundle phone, TV, and Internet service on the same bill, but not as many as today.

The new battleground for communications in the home today is package deals with all of your phone, TV, and Internet services bundled on the same bill. The major players in this epic battle of the bundles are phone and cable companies. The appeal for consumers being lower cost, and just the convenience of having everything on one bill. Both companies offer a choice high speed Internet plans, home phone service plans, and digital television programming packages. Currently, only the telephone companies provide cellular service, but that will be changing soon. Comcast is rumored to be looking into providing cellular service to its customer base in the near future.

Even with bundled packages being so popular right now, consumer demand has caused some of the big telcos to unbundle some of their services. AT&T and Verizon now offer naked DSL, or DSL without phone service, whereas in the past you needed to have at least local phone service to get their DSL package. So, what are the advantages of having all of your services on one bill compared to going A la carte? There are pros and cons in both scenarios, and it ultimately comes down to your personal usage habits, and how much you’re willing to spend, or even customer loyalty.

As discussed earlier, one of the biggest advantages and most common reason for bundled services is convenience. Why deal with the hassle of three or four different bills each month, all coming in at different times, all due on different dates when you can get one bill at the same time every month, and pay it all at the same time? It’s a no brainer. It just makes life a lot easier. Not to mention, you’ll likely get a bit of a discount by having more than one service on the same bill, even after any promotional period has expired. I would also venture to say convenience plays a bigger role as to why these plans are so popular more than price.

Having made the case for bundled packages, what are the advantages of unbundled phone, TV, and Internet services? The answer is cost. Some people just like to pick and choose their services in order to maximize cost effectiveness regardless of having to pay separate bills. To these people cheaper is better, and is worth a little inconvenience. I’m one of these people. Like myself, many broadband phone users find it hard to make a case for bundled packages since a really cheap phone bill can reduce the cost overall, and for me it does, but I have a confession.

I use broadband phone service for both my home, and business phone, but I do have a bundled plan with my cable provider. You see, a bundle simply means more than one service on the same bill. You don’t necessarily have to get everything they offer, or choose a preconfigured package for it to qualify as a bundle. I have my cable TV and Internet through the same company, and because I have cable television, I get a discount on their high speed Internet. I also pay only one residential phone bill of $200 a year which gives me unlimited calling all of the time. This configuration makes my elective utilities super cheap.

With competition being what it is, there are lots of ways to get any of these services in your home. For TV there is cable, satellite, fiber optic, or IPTV delivered over fiber from AT&T. For Internet service you can choose from ordinary dialup, to high speed like cable, DSL, fiber optic, or even wireless. Phone service comes in a plethora of flavors as well, including cable phone, landline, VoIP or broadband phone, or cellular. The possibilities, and combinations are almost limitless.

When it comes to electronics or any digital gadget, you want to make a decision you will be happy with it. The best way to go about making the right choice is to be informed and know what it is you need to look out for. Likewise, purchasing a new TV antenna for your property will require some research and product reviews. Like with any other device, the odds are against you if you make your pick based on no information.

There are several factors you need to consider when it comes to picking the right HD antenna for your TV, and the biggest, most important factor to take into consideration is the location of where you intend to use it. Cosmetics will be the least of your concerns, and choosing a slightly smaller antenna over a bigger one because it’s "cuter" should not be in your mind at all. Your goal is functionality, and making the right antenna choice by doing some minor research will help you attain that goal.

First, you will want to pay Antenna Web a visit so you can input your address and additional information, such as nearby airports or large structures, into the online form. The results will show a list of the closest broadcast towers in your area, the station name and channel, and the degree that they are situated. This is important to note because this will determine in what direction you will want to position your antenna.

Positioning your antenna so that it is pointed towards the broadcast tower will allow it to pick up its transmission. If there are multiple towers that you would like your antenna to receive transmission from, then a multi-directional antenna, which is able to pick up signals from all around it and not one particular area, will do the job. Assuming that the property is located in or around a major metropolitan city where all local television stations broadcast their transmission from a single tower, then an omni-directional antenna will do the job. An omni-directional antenna can actually pick up multiple signals at a time as long as the towers are no more than 20 degrees apart from one another.

The antennas on an indoor model usually do not have to be pointed in the direction of the towers but sometimes they would. Due to the fact that an indoor antenna has to overcome interference from household electronics and appliances, building materials that comprise your home, and any outside obstructions, its ability to get a direct line of sight to the towers is compromised. Although indoor antennas, depending on the model and its specifications, can perform well, some antenna aficionados will agree that an outdoor model will outperform an indoor antenna in most cases. Of course there is the exception in certain situations, such as if the home or business with the antenna is located too close to the transmission towers.

As always, do a lot of product comparing, speak to knowledgeable antenna specialists, and read product reviews to get a better understanding of how antennas work and what else you need to look out for.

One of the best parts of having a home theater is not having to settle for cola in a paper cup with your movie. Entertainment options are open whether it is a crowd of friends, your family, or just you and a date in front of your home theater. So mix up a few drinks and put out the appetizers. Appetizers are easy and can be easily tailored to the movie, but drinks are sometimes harder to pick out. There are a few simple ones that go for most occasions.

If the high definition at home seems a good enough reason to avoid winter snow, you will want something warm and comfortable to drink. It seems an old standard, but why not perk up the standard hot chocolate concoction and have a treat. Hot chocolate makes us feel like a kid again, so it is great for family gatherings, but do not count chocolate out for a more cozy date night. Gourmet hot cocoa is only limited by your imagination. Add some nutmeg and cinnamon to your cocoa and stir with a cinnamon stick for a warm nutty flavor. If you put a few a few rasberries in your food processor and liquify them, you can add them to your pot of cocoa. Top those cocoa glasses with some mint sprigs and a rasberry chocolate stirring stick from your local grocery store you have a gourmet cocoa that you cannot find outside of Aspen. My favorite thing is to grind up peppermint into my cocoa pot and top the cups with whipped cream and ground chocolate mints. A fresh sprig of mint as a garnish makes it just right for entertaining.

For when the weather is warmer, your blender will come in handy. Fresh fruit is widely available in the summer and we all should take advantage of that. Strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and all kinds of melon blend well into a drink. Put a few cups of ice into your blender and add a few handfuls of cherries to it. Pour on a bit of pomegranate juice and blend it up until it is smooth, and you will have the perfect chilled drink for the high definition beach flick that comes out every summer. Cut up some strawberries, kiwis, and one tangerine into your blender. Drop on a scoop of ice afterward as well as just a little sweetened condensed milk and a few drops of vanilla extract. Blend it until everything is the same color and all the ice is crushed. If you want to be really fun, drink it out of cups made from coconuts.

Excerpt from Carmen Rasmusen
Top 10, Season 2

My mom has always told me to visualize. "Anything you want to have happen, Carmen, you just have to see it first in your mind. . . ." I knew that she was right, but honestly, there are just so many times that you can hear the visualization lecture without wanting to run screaming from the room — or at least change the subject.

When I was a freshman in high school, my mom and dad took me to see the Dixie Chicks at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City. During the concert, the Dixie Chicks said, "We want to tell all of you out there to never give up on your dreams. Just see yourself doing whatever it is you dream about, and one day that dream will be yours." I turned to my mom and told her that one day I’d be singing in that same place, and thousands of people would be shouting my name. True to style, my mom told me that I had to visualize it, and that’s what I started to do every night before I went to bed.

When we heard about the American Idol auditions, my mom immediately said, "You’re meant to do this." So I participated in a contest that was held in Salt Lake City at the FOX 13 studios for a guaranteed audition for Idol with all expenses paid to Los Angeles. It didn’t mean that the winner of the local contest would even get past the first judge at the Idol audition, but it did mean that he or she wouldn’t have to camp out in line.

"I’m so nervous!" I said, as we pulled up to the FOX studio.

"Carmen," my mom said, as we got out of the car, "you’re going to win this contest, and you’re going to L.A. I know it’s your destiny."

One hour later, I was announced as the winner out of 200 contenders of the "Salt Lake City Idol" contest, and was on my way home to pack and hop on a plane.

I sailed through my first audition in front of a senior producer, and my next in front of Executive Producer Ken Warwick. Then it was on to the Big 3 — which turned out to be the Big 2 because Randy was away filming a commercial. That day, I got my golden ticket to Hollywood.

Hollywood Week was intense. Since I was only seventeen, my mom had to be there. I was happy about that since she was always positive that I was going all the way. Not an ounce of doubt in her mind! Imagine her surprise when I was cut on my third audition, the day before they decided on the Final 32.

My mom put her arm around me as I was going in for that fateful audition and whispered, "I’ll be visualizing for you." They had us in lines of twenty and said, "Will everyone in the first line step forward, please? Congratulations, you are going through! Second line, step forward, please. . . "

When I looked at my line, I was with everyone who had forgotten their words or had messed up in some other way. I knew it was over — and I was right.
"Congratulations for making it this far, but unfortunately . . ." And that was that. It was November 2002.

"I don’t get it!" I cried, back in our hotel room while we packed — this time for home.

"Did you visualize yourself making it?" my mom asked.

"Yes, and obviously, it doesn’t work. I don’t want to talk about it."

I think my mom was actually kind of in shock. For her, it was like knowing every day of your life that your hair is blonde, and then waking up one morning and it’s blue.

So, "Miss FOX 13 Salt Lake Idol" came home, applied to BYU, and started planning a different life. My mom, however, picked herself up from her blue-hair moment and told me she still believed that I was going to be in the Top 12. She believed it so much that every time a FedEx truck passed our house, she fully expected that it was going to stop and deliver a letter from the producers apologizing for having made a horrible mistake and begging me to come back.

Three months passed, and that familiar sound of the American Idol theme song began to fill our house every Tuesday and Wednesday night. I couldn’t stand it — whenever I heard that music, I felt like I was supposed to be on the show. So I would walk out and go sulk in my room, while my nine-year-old sister was busy calling in and voting for Kimberly Caldwell.

Soon there were only a few weeks left until the Top 12 were chosen. I forced myself to sit down one night and watch as the contestants screamed and jumped up and down when they were told that they had made it into the finals. My mother’s words rang in my ears: "One of the most powerful forms of visualization is ‘acting as if.’ See the images, hear the sounds, act out what it would feel like if you achieved your dream — and see what happens."

Getting up from the couch, I walked into my parents’ bathroom. I stood in front of the mirror for a while, staring at my disappointed reflection. Then, I started to smile — bigger and bigger. I clapped my hands in excitement. Then I started to scream, jump up and down, and shout, "I made it into the Top 12! I’m going to sing on TV in front of millions of people!" I felt the excitement in every fiber, and I swear, although I was just acting, I knew something had shifted. I can’t explain what it was, but I was so elated — for no real reason whatsoever!

Two weeks later, my mom was going out when the phone rang. She was on for longer than usual, so I went in to see who she was talking to. She was grinning from ear to ear and kept saying, "Okay. All right." I could almost taste her excitement. Finally, she hung up the phone.

"Who was that?" I asked.

"Guess," she said, with the cutest Cheshire Cat grin on her face.

"Who, Mom?! Come on!"

"Guess," she repeated, doing a little jumping-up-and-down thing and grabbing my hands.

"Who, Mom, who?!"

Now I was jumping up and down with her and squealing, as she just kept on repeating, "You have to guess."

I knew it had to be someone amazing, because even for my mom, this was no normal amount of excitement!

Finally, she shouted, "It was Ken Warwick, the producer from American Idol. They want you back! You’ve been picked to be on the Wild Card show. You leave for Los Angeles in the morning." It was February 2003.

I slowly turned to look at myself in the mirror. I started screaming and clapping and jumping up and down, exactly as I had acted it out just two weeks before . . . only now, I wasn’t acting. I was really, truly going to be on the show and singing in front of millions.

And one week later, I sat on the bench during the results show and heard Simon Cowell say, "The person I’ve chosen for the Top 12 . . . is Carmen."

It was one of the most exhilarating moments of my life when I stood up and joined the other eleven contestants. And as I looked over at my mom, something passed between us.

After I came in at #6, and the famous Clay vs. Ruben Finale ended with Ruben taking the crown, we began our forty-city American Idols Live! tour. And I know I will never forget the night when I took the stage at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City . . . and thousands of people were shouting my name.

Getting high definition television to our living rooms has not been as easy a ride as many people perceive. High definition standards and broadcasts have been mixed up because of logistical problems within our government. Broadcasters were not initially happy to cooperate with eachother, and cable and satellite providers as well as manufacturers confused retailers when it comes to selling high definition television. These same people confused the people buying products because no one knew what products they needed, how to use them, and what programmingn was actually available in high definition. The digital television transition has brought all the providers of cable and satellite television services on board as far as high definition information.

More and more television stations in rural and local areas are installing all the hardware they need to start broadcasting high definition television. Most of the local network outlets broadcast their morning and evening news programs in high definition, and other major broadcasters are following suit.

Satellite and cable television services you pay for are falling under pressure to offer more and more of their feeds in high definition. Showtime, HBO, ESPN, FOX, CW CBS, NBC, ABC, Hdnet, Discovery, and a number of other broacasters are putting more and more broadcast hours in high definition. Also, Blu-ray discs and other outside sources of high definition entertainment give our consumers just one more way to access high definition content for their brand new high definition televisions as part of the home theater experience.

Even though there is an increased availability in programming and an increasingly steady turnover to high definition television broadcasting, the average consumer is still very confused over facts about high definition televisions, programming, equipment, setup, and actual use. There are some comon frequently asked questions as well as lesser asked questions about possible applications of this new technology. Consumers can rely in internet as well as in store sources as far as getting those digital television and high definition television questions answered. Be sure to check with a knowledgeable store with a good reputation for handing out the correct answers to your television questions. You can also search on line for lists of frequently asked high definition television questions. If you are asking about it, chances are a number of other people are as well. Soon you’ll be able to help all your friends pick out their perfect home theater, and you will have the right system for yourself as well.

Despite their optimistic name, positive ions do not make people feel good. In fact, scientific studies have found that positive ions are linked with depression. If children are spending most of their waking hours in front of television and computer monitors, which inundate them with positive ion emissions, what will the long-term effect of positive ion exposure be on our kids?

Anxiety, depression, stress and fatigue have all been linked to positive ion exposure. Links have also been found between positive ions and various inflammatory diseases. Almost all toxins found in the air that surround us, like pollen, chemicals, pet dander, dust, viruses and bacteria, are all positively charged particles (Barry, 1995).

One of the biggest culprits of positive ion pollution is found in virtually every home and office, the computer monitor. Televisions are also high on the list of positive ion emitters. Computers have long been associated with eye strain, carpal tunnel tendonitis and migraines, but recent evidence shows that the effects of frequent computer use also is linked with something more subtle – clinical depression.

The basic fact of ions is that negative ions are attracted to the screen and positive ions are attracted to the user. This is one explanation of the disorders associated with computer and television use. Unfortunately, both the school house and the workplace are increasingly reliant on computers as a way of life.

It’s common sense that depression lowers job performance and productivity. Since children today have no recollection of life without computers, what does this say about their psychological well-being? Are our children being bombarded with positive ions that will bring them long-term clinical depression?

Children today are almost always either watching television, playing video games, or on the computer. What does the connection between monitors and televisions, positive ions and depression mean for their future? The answer is still unclear. But, if the average American child is spending six and a half hours a day, seven days a week, using electronic media (Edwards, 2005), it is certainly worthwhile to consider the connection between technology and depression.

One solution that many schools and business have been investigating is negative ion technology. Negative ions occur naturally in waterfalls and after storms. This is why the air becomes pure and refreshing near a waterfall or in the moments after a storm. Negative ions have been shown to help overcome depression in a variety of studies.

A purification system introduces negative ions into the air. These ions fill the room, causing more oxygen to flow to the brain. With more oxygen comes better moods and increased productivity. A classroom filled with negative ions is a productive one. Negative ions have been shown to positively affect classroom performance in both learning disabled and normal-achieving students (Morton, 1989).

Studies have yet to determine the long-term benefits of negative ions. But in a world saturated with computer monitors and televisions, a blast of them can surely lift your mood when you need it the most. Let’s hope that they can help our children.

Mr. Fox researches workplace productivity due to mood disorders, lack of relationship building, and depression symptoms. In his articles he discusses technology-social caused depression, poor productivity, addictions, enriched nutrition, , team collaboration, and stop smoking programs. His mission is to combat the modern technology depression productivity crisis.

The few weeks ago, I flipped my TV on and it wouldn’t come on. The red LED in front just kept flashing until it went out and the "Lamp" light came on. Oh great, my husband had just took off on a militaristic deployment and now I am without TV. I quickly logged onto my laptop to contact my spouse, who just insisted we buy a LCD HDTV three years ago.

I told him that his "awesome" television is broken and now I have no hubby and no TV either. You have to love new technology because the next thing I know, he wrote back and told me he bought the extended warranty on the Sony HDTV. The extended warranty only lasts 4 years so I knew we were pushing it. I also knew the paperwork was concealed somewhere with all the rest of the significant documents we had.

After fumbling through documents for an hour, I eventually located it in an unopened box from our move. I opened it up and found the date of purchase, exactly 3 months shy of four years. YES! So I contacted Sony and let them know the HDTV model I have and my purchase number.

They arranged a local electronics store to come to my residence, make certain it was the lamp and then replace it. They even gave me an appointment day and time. I waited around all day for the serviceman to come to my residence the day of the repair but he never showed up. Do you know how annoying it is to go from a 52" HDTV to no high definition 19" television? It’s quite dissatisfying.

I called the electronics company and ask them what happened. They gave me another appointment and apologized, which was o.k., everyone makes mistakes. Still, the next appointment never happened either. Then I called again and they said that they just went ahead and ordered the lamp. They said the lamp would arrive in two days.

Three days later, there was still no lamp. It wasn’t until virtually 2 weeks afterwards that they eventually got to my home with the lamp. The two techs just took off the front access panel to the television, unscrewed the lamp frame, and replaced it.

It took almost five minutes. I could have certainly ordered the lamp myself and fixed it more than a week ago. I will definitely recollect that for the next time my precious high definition TV’s bulb goes out.

My spouse is a huge UFC fan. He will pay the $14.99 for the HD version of the pay per view games whenever they are on. I get a little angry since I think the money is a bit outrageous for a show that only last two hours.

Nonetheless, I love my husband and if he wants HD for his games…fine. I once asked him why he didn’t want to save $10 and get the regular picture one. He educated me that the picture was so much more vivid and true looking when he watched it on HD.

I decided to check this for myself since I am an avid watcher of our HDTV. I browsed some of the HD channels and found out that we had HD Discovery and TLC. I started watching my programs like "House Hunters" and "A Baby Story" on those channels instead of the regular ones.

I must declare the HD channels were much more gratifying to the eye on my HDTV than the others were. Everything was so much brighter and the color was so much truer than with the other channels. I tried to go back to the other channels once and I just couldn’t do it.

I craved the better ones! One day my husband came into the room and without even asking he said, "I see you have finally backed down and you’re watching the better picture quality." I didn’t reply because I knew he was right and I should have let myself see what he meant when he just had to have the fight for $40.

Sometimes you have to listen to your hubby because he truly does know what he is talking about with electronics. I am so gladsome that I backed down, I guess it was time. So now that I am all excited about this new television watching experience, my spouse told me something else that excited me.

On February 17, 2009, all broadcasters will be transmitting high quality signals, which mean ALL of my shows will look as great as these do. I can view "Nip/Tuck" and "ER" in a completely new way. Anyway, the reason I am writing this is for all of you girls or guys who haven’t gave these channels a chance.

I thought there was no difference at first too but now I am hooked. It’s awesome what technology has done with televisions and I am excited to see what’s in store for us down the road!.

It is everyone’s dream to be able to clean out the attic of their home and discover that they have something of real value that has been hidden away up there.

It really does happen and more often than we probably think. The business of collecting and keeping old things or unique things has become very popular and many times profitable as well.

If you are a fan of watching the BBC through your cable or satellite television service, then you may have seen the popular UK show, Cash in the Attic. It first aired in 2002 and has been on for eleven seasons. It is very popular over there and is watched by many here in the United States.

The show has a really unique format. The cast of the show that consist of several members, will go to a particular home where the occupants need to get a certain amount of money for some special reason. It can be to remodel in the home, go on a trip, or just do something nice for someone else. The reasons they need to raise money are usually different.

The way that the show helps these people get the money they need is by cleaning out their attic and any other room of the house that might contain items that they can part with. After they have found any number of things, they will set them up at a public sale to be auctioned off. This is such an interesting and often funny procedure to watch.

Unfortunately for the people selling their items, the auctions can take place weeks later and they have to wait to know the results of how much money they will make. Once the items are brought to the auction site, it can be really exciting to watch and see if the things they chose to sell will bring in the amounts of money that they hoped for.

Seeing the sometimes ecstatic reactions of the seller when an item does really well, or the disappointment they show when an item does not meet their expectations is a lot of fun.

We are lucky to have the ability to see programs such as this one that are produced and filmed in other countries. We get to see that when all is said and done, many of us across the world are more alike than we know. Especially when it comes to collecting things and how we eventually get rid of them.

When the radio was invented it suddenly became possible to hear entertainers of all kinds by many people all at once. It changed the way that we were entertained in our homes.

Suddenly there was an alternative to sitting around the fireplace and listening to each other. We could sit around the fireplace and listen to more interesting strangers.

There was a variety of programs to listen to, including funny ones. When the radio was invented and began to be a common item in our homes, there were wars and the depression to contend with.

People loved the times that they could escape all these real and depressing situations with the laughter that could be found from listening to radio.

With the invention of television, we had even more exposure to comedy on demand. Everyone loves to laugh and many of those first television shows were funny ones. Texas Star Theatre had Milton Berle and was a variety show. Many of the acts that were done on this show and others like it, were done in the vaudeville style.

The situation comedy was our next venue for very good funny material. I Love Lucy was one of the most memorable, but not nearly the only one.

Ozzie and Harriet, Leave it to Beaver, Father Knows Best and others, would often depict an idealized family life that was a little to good to be true, but everyone loved to watch these programs and they all can still to be seen today because of cable and satellite television channels.

Situation comedies that we watch on television since the 1970′s try to give us a more realistic picture of what true family life is like. When it was presented to us in the way that All in the Family was, it was easier to find things associated with the way our lives really are and they can be hilarious. There are unfortunately real people in some of our families exactly like Archie Bunker.

Stand up comedians have also played a big part in our comedy choices over the years. Many of these first stand up comedians originated on the stages of vaudeville too. Then they were heard on radio and then television.

Milton Berle, Groucho Marx, Jack Benny, and Bob Hope were some of the first really successful ones. They were often the master of ceremonies of television shows and the comedic monologues that they did were an important part of a program.

We still have all these comedic forms that we can enjoy today through radio and television. They still liven up our lives on a daily basis. If we have had a bad day, it is easy to come home and turn on the tube and watch something funny. It will just about always feel better.

If you are one of the millions out there who are still watching movies or television on the standard definition, then you might as well be a caveman. Standard definition is very quickly going the way of the dinosaur. Like most cavemen, you are probably waiting on somebody to come along and invent the wheel. Well, wait no more, because the wheel has been invented, and it is called high definition. High definition is very quickly becoming the standard for what is most popularly viewed, so in an ironic way, it is becoming the standard definition of media viewing today. The reasons for why one should switch over to high definition are numerous, but here we will focus on the most prominent.

One of the first reasons is simply that high definition just plain looks better. When you watch television in standard definition, then you may be seeing the image clearly enough for say, the local news. But let us say that you are watching your favorite, over the top, explosion filled, action movie. Then you may as well still be watching the local news, because you are missing out on a level of detail and clarity in the image. With high definition, you can get as close to a trip to the theatre in your home as is currently available on the consumer market. What may look like just a clump of color that is supposed to be the hair of an actor is now much more clear to where you could almost swear that you could count the number of hairs on their head.

Another reason to make the change over to high definition is because gradually, many companies are increasing their output of media to the high definition format. This is because of the rising belief that soon enough standard definition media players and televisions will become obsolete. Another reason is because of the rising cost efficiency of high definition media, televisions, and media players. The cost of high definition, media, or televisions is currently nearly equal to that of the standard definition versions, even though the cost is still slightly higher.

If you are interested in making the shift over to high definition, then there are a few things you need to keep in mind. You need to keep in mind that a high definition media player will not increase the resolution of a standard definition DVD. You should also remember to look for any deals or specials in your area for standard definition items.

If you are a movie buff, then no doubt you have been wanting to make the shift from standard definition television viewing over to high definition. You want to experience as close to a trip to the theatre at home, and know that the switch to high definition is the best way to do that. If you want to make the change over to high definition, then here are some of the things that you should know before you go out buying the first pretty television or media player that comes your way.

Since you are a movie buff, you already know that switching over to high definition would mean being able to see a crystal clear image, instead of a clump of pixels and colors that are supposed to be actors. You know already that sounds are much sharper, allowing you to pick out sound effects individually, instead of the sounds being clumped together. You know all of that. But here are some things that you may not know.

First of all, you need to keep in mind that just because you have a high definition television, does not mean that it will amplify your standard definition movies or television broadcasts to high definition. Instead, you will need to purchase a media player that plays in high definition and buy movies that are made for that particular media player. That way, you can get the best possible quality out of your movies. You will also have to make sure what you watch on television is broadcast in high definition. If you do not want to have to replace all of your old movies, then you will be glad to know that most high definition media players are backwards compatible, meaning that they will play your standard definition movies.

If you really want to switch over to high definition, then you need to keep in mind that there are several deals, specials, and sales out there for you to take advantage of in order to not hurt your wallet too much. You should also be sure to keep an eye out online for any deals that you can find, although the market online is buyer beware, because often you will not be compensated for any damages made to a package that is sent to you. If you find that you are ready to make the change, then do some of your own research and you will find it is the best decision, entertainment wise, you can make.

If you are a new home owner who is looking for the perfect thing to put in your brand new home, then here is a suggestion you might find entertaining. Perhaps your living room could do with a brand new, high definition television? Now, you may be thinking that a high definition anything would be expensive, but if you do your own independent research and just keep in mind to be a smart shopper, then you may be surprised at just how easy it would be to put a high definition entertainment center in your home without breaking the bank. Here are some facts and tips that should help make this process much easier.

The first thing you need to keep in mind is that there are several outlets that you can turn to to be able to buy a high definition television, but your best bet is almost always going to be in an electronics store. Be sure to go into any electronic store with a clear idea in your mind of what it is you want. Do you want a larger TV for your living room, or do you think you should conserve space? Are you trying to save money?

Things like that should be factors. You need to be able to keep a clear idea in your head of what you want so that when you walk into the store you cannot be talked into buying something completely different from what you wanted by a salesperson. You also need to make sure that you study up on different brands, different prices, and different features. You need to compare and contrast all of these things between the TVs that you are considering so that you can confidently make the right purchase.

Now what you need to do is start shopping around. Go to different stores and compare and contrast different brands and prices between stores. Find the store that will give you the best possible deal for your money. If you are going to have a high definition television, then you need to keep in mind that you will need to have a high definition movie player to get the full effect of watching movies in high definition. Also keep in mind that a high definition movie player will not enhance the quality of your standard definition movies, but most high definition players will still play your high definition movies, so you do not necessarily have to replace them.

HDTV is yelling at our door and you’ll have to let it in! Will you be in the dark February 17, 2009? Better read on! A few dates to be aware of! March 1, 2007: Any component that has an analog TV tuner must also permit a digital tuner.

Feb 17, 2009: A government mandate requires that all full-power TV broadcasters stop broadcasting analog signals and change to 100% digital broadcasting by THIS DATE!!! This transmutation will primarily alter nearly 15-20 million TV viewers who rely on local over-the-air broadcasts received via antenna.

Viewers who concord to cable or Dish TV shouldn’t undergo any disruption in those services. If needful, your Cable or Dish provider will provide a digital set-top box that will work with your TV.

Ok, what do I need to do? For continuing broadcasting after the 2009 cutoff, all of you out there with your old-fashioned TVs (analog-only tuners) will need to be joined to a digital-to-analog converter box, or replaced by a new HDTV with a built-in digital tuner.

As of now these device boxes will sell for between $50 and $70. These will be acquirable to the public real soon! If you opt out for the "stand alone" convertor box don’t be fooled that you will have a high definition signal, you will be receiving a digital signal alright but like the boxes title, it’s converting it back to analog!

Also if you currently subscribe to DIRECTV or DISH, your HD satellite receiver will most likely include an over-the air HD receiver to get your local HDTV stations.

Let me add something to this, most all your Cable and Satellite companies will charge you more (ordinarily around $10/month more) to get your local High def signals via there receiver! If you take this route and your ok with $10 fee your set to go! Your otherwise choice?…

Acquire your own over-the-air (OTA) HDTV antenna and save the $120/year! The antenna is affordable and actually you will get a better image than via your cable or Dish provider’s box! How? When you get your Hi def signal via your own hd antenna your are getting a (pure) 100% digital uncompressed signal!

Getting your signal through a Dish/Cable provider causes the HD signal to get compressed (squeezed smaller) in order for your provider to carry along with all the other channels their providing you! Go right ahead and let’em in!

Hdtv is quickly approaching but it’s ok. Having the noesis of the options you know to decide upon will make it effortless to open the door!

Let me take the minute to explain what happened to us when we tried to hook up a HDTV antenna so you won’t have to waste your time doing the similar objective. First of all our entire family had always craved a HDTV.

This was a task within it’s self. There must be 100 different brands and types to opt from! So we did eventually encounter one that we all agreed upon. After we had set up the TV we learned that we also had to acquire a HDTV antenna to be able to check our local channels broadcasted in HD.

Our original antenna we tried was purchased at the same spot as our TV. After we assembled it unitedly in the garage we carried it inside and up the stairs to the 2nd story window.

We lifted it out the pane and put the 17 yr old on the roof with the antenna. We used walkie talkies to interact between the roof and the family room with the tv. His job was to turn the antenna in tiny increments till the signaling came in.

The problem was we could only get 2 channels at a time coming in clear but never could we get all the channels coming in at one time. So we brought the antenna in, carried it to the garage, dissembled it and took it back to buy a bigger one and go through the complete procedure again.

Once more on top of the roof with the 17 yr old. Twisting and turning and all the while in a downfall storm. It wasn’t that bad but still raining all the same.

This went on for virtually a total of 4 nights in the period of December during the cold and rain. We could never get this HDTV antenna to operate so we finally gave up. We brought the big anomaly antenna in again dissembled it and put it back in the car to return.

I was glad it didn’t work because it looked horrendous up there on the roof. It stuck out like a tender finger. Then we did some research on the internet and found an antenna that claimed to do everything we needed and the good part was it was cheaper and way way smaller.

Actually in wasn’t no bigger than the size of a cake sheet. So we purchased the HDTV antenna and brought it home. No assembly required and we put the 17yr old back on the roof with the walkie talkies again and this time we had a signal before we even tried to alter the antenna.

It was implausible.. we found all the channels coming in crystal clear without even trying to set the antenna in the perfect "sweet" spot that we were use to setting with the previous additional two.

Just by putting it on the roof and pointing it in the generalized direction where the stations were located was all that was required! Seemingly this HDTV antenna was a much higher caliber antenna.

If I would have known this 5 days before, I could have saved all those evenings, the poor kid on the roof and the aggrevation it took for our house to eventually like HDTV!

Last summer in tourist resorts on mainland Europe the reputation of young British holidaymakers took a hammering – again – from Spain to Greece and other popular holiday destinations.

British newspapers and television programmes ran stories on a regular basis during the holiday months of Brits behaving badly, culmilating in the reports of two women being so intoxicated with alcohol on their flight home that they tried to open a cabin door to get some fresh air – at 30,000 feet, resulting in the plane landing in Germany before flying home to the UK, minus the two ladies in question.

One British based satellite television news channel sent a reporter to Majorca to see for himself what happened when holiday nightlife and British youth mixed – and the result wasn’t pretty. Part of his report said:

‘Just watching these hardcore holidaymakers is enough to give me a hangover – their ability to keep necking alcohol and party is incredible.

They are knocking back shots, pints, beer, spirits and coloured liquids that look like they should be used as bathroom cleaners.’ And added ‘It is colourful and amusing, if a little disturbing when stone cold sober. And of course there are some louts who spoil things for everyone else.

As the night wears on, the vomiting begins and some young people get in such a state they can barely get up off the ground, let alone make it back to their hotel or apartment.’

Meanwhile in the US, British behaviour while on holiday hasn’t gone unnoticed, with one news channel reporting:

‘A newly published report into British behavior abroad suggests that more Britons than ever are flying the flag of obnoxiousness in foreign climes. The report reveals a steep increase in arrests of Brits overseas: 33% in Spain and 42% in France over the previous year. "Many arrests are due to behavior caused by excessive drinking," the report states. "We are concerned that drink does play a part in a number of these situations," Meg Munn, a minister in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, which published the report, told the BBC.

Wondering perhaps if the media spotlight falling on British holidaymakers by their own media was portraying them in a bad light unfairly, the US news channel observed:

60% of the Brits returning from Mallorca said that they had been drunk on at least five days of their one-week holiday, compared to 41% of Germans and only 6% of Spanish. More than 7% of Britons, meanwhile, had been involved in a fracas, compared with 3.6% of Germans and just 2.3% of Spanish.

The question of whether the British do behave badly while on holiday compared to other nationalities is answered perhaps by Mark Bellis, who is Professor of Public Health at Liverpool John Moores University which conducted the research.

‘People from all the countries we’ve looked at have increased levels of alcohol use when they’re travelling abroad – they’re treating every night like a Friday or Saturday night. The reality, unfortunately, is that the levels of drunkenness among Britons are higher, and that’s led to some of the alcohol related problems we’re familiar with.’

So it appears that while most people do increase the level of alcohol they drink while on holiday, the British tend to do it more than anyone else, and bad behaviour often follows excess drinking.

With the British economy doing poorly this year it’s possible that some of the young British tourists who might normally take their drunken antics to places like Majorca might have to do it a bit closer to home this summer.

This summer’s Majorca holidays information is on-line and can be found at Majorca tourist guide yourmajorca.net Palma Airport information and cheap Majorca flights are available from different airlines plus some photographs of Majorca

Unless you live on an entirely different planet than the rest of us, you have probably at least heard of high definition television. There are television sets that are made today especially for receiving the more technological digital signals that are now being broadcast from so many channels that so many movies and television shows are being made in. If you have also heard that these televisions are more expensive than others, you have heard correctly. However, the prices have come down some in the past couple of years and more and more people are trading in their old set for a new one.

Television has finally gotten to the point that it can be just like watching a movie on the big screen at the theaters. Most movies are made in high definition these days and that is what makes them so vibrant and brilliant to see at the theater. It is nice for those that already have the right televisions at home to be able to enjoy this kind of visionary quality without ever having to leave their house. Of course, you have to invest in the newer high definition televisions to get it. Deciding whether you want an LCD or Plasma can be a little confusing and many people might not even know the difference. If you do not, you are not alone.

The definitions and differences between Plasma and LCD televisions is easier to look at than explain. If you are considering buying a new set that you can receive HD signals on, the best way to decide which type, which brand, which model, and what size you want is to visit your favorite electronics store that carries a large selection and view them for yourself. It makes it so easy to compare the picture qualities right there in the store before you buy any particular one. It is always helpful to choose a store that has knowledgeable personnel that can tell you the facts about each one on display.

You could need a little help with the installation of your new television, so choosing a store that provides this service might be a good idea as well. Once you have it installed, you are ready to enjoy the best your cable or satellite service has to offer. Some cable or satellite companies offer more HD channels and programs than others. This is something you also might want to check into. Having an HD set at home will allow you to enjoy the pictures on your screen so much better than you have ever been able to before.
