Healing Your Sick Dog at Home

In these fast lives of ours there are but few things that bring us genuine pleasure. A warm hug, a shoulder to cry on, a compassionate friend whose loyalty is unquestionable and someone who comes racing towards you, every time you reach home, and arrests you in a warm embrace and licks you incessantly to show how eagerly they had been waiting for your return. Guess who this mystery messiah is? A dog, of course! What were you thinking? Now don’t accuse me for thinking. Just kidding.

Keeping in mind, the immense contentment they bring us, it is not difficult to understand why a lot of people treat their pet dogs as no less than their children. And it becomes really hard for them to put up with their pet’s anguish, especially during the later’ illnesses. Here are some tips to help you keep your dog as comfortable as possible during these difficult times.

• When you become sick, you can deduce that something is wrong with you which is making you feel blue. Your dog doesn’t have that privilege. He is unable to comprehend that something is wrong with him. So the first step is, to maintain the status quo. Don’t alter a lot in the way you treat him. Show that you genuinely care but restrain from going overboard. Excessive attention from family members causes more harm than good as the dog doesn’t get enough opportunity, to rest, relax and recuperate.

• Do not bring about drastic changes in the dog’s environment, especially their sleeping places. But sick dogs need sufficient warmth when they are sleeping. So, in case his sleeping place is a tad dampish or there is a constant flow of a chilly breeze, install a heating source nearby, to correct the situation.

Don’t overheat the surrounding as that can be severely detrimental. Check the dog’s coat occasionally to ensure he is at a suitable temperature.

• A dog does not know when he is ill and yet he realizes that he can’t play around or do any of the routine things that require energy and stamina. This can be very frustrating for him. Try not to perturb him any further. Keep children away from sick dogs and ask them to be quiet and still around them. And even if they do touch them, they must do so with extreme caution and gentleness.

• Strangers are an absolute no-no, anywhere within the periphery of your home, in case there is a sick dog inside. Don’t do anything that unnecessarily startles or alarms an already confused animal.

Diseases are a part of every organism’s life. Your dog is no different. No matter how arduously you want him to get well again, the fact is that medicine takes time to heal. Let time take its course, but meanwhile; follow these simple guidelines to ensure that your dog has a comfortable and pleasant.
